Fan backlash? Technically not. But Second Coming received such a ferocious backlash from non-fans, it resulted in the book losing its spot at DC Comics.

Mark Russell and Richard Pace's Second Coming was first published last year by AHOY Comics, but original plans called for Second Coming to go out under DC Comics' Vertigo imprint.

For those not familiar with Second Coming, the title centres on God sending Jesus to the present-day Earth. Unhappy at how his son handled things the first time around, God is looking for Jesus to make amends by using the superhero Sun-Man as inspiration on how to get things done.

Even though the book was designed to be a slice of social commentary on Christianity, DC Comics ran into a brickwall of backlash before they could even get a single issue of Second Coming published.

Upon getting word of Second Coming, certain Christian groups set up an online petition which garnered well over 200,000 signatures decrying for this title to be cancelled.

By all accounts, DC did want to push forward with publishing Second Coming, but they wanted Warren and Race to make certain changes to the tale. As such, the duo instead decided to ask for the rights to the title to be returned to them - a move which DC agreed to - so that they could publish Second Coming elsewhere in the way that they had intended the story to be presented.
