Way before 'The Wicked + The Divine', Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie created another series focusing on magic, music and gods called 'Phonogram'. 'Phonogram' is built around the idea that music is life. There's no other way to really put it. And volume 1 follows David Kohl, a phonomancer, (Someone with the ability to harness the power of music) and his being tasked with stopping the resurrection of Britannia, the goddess of britpop. David embarks on a task that will potentially put himself at risk, as an individual with strong ties to britpop and Britannia herself. Some have said that the series is kinda trying to achieve the impossible in being 'about music', but it succeeds beautifully, almost in a similar way to Seinfeld being a show about nothing. It's not about nothing - it's about life, and this rings true for 'Phonogram'. Regardless of who you are, what you listen to or what music you hate (read: Kula Shaker) - that's fine. Because music affects you as a person. It has this mysterious power, this ability to make you feel something. And with 'Phonogram', this 'power' that music has is so brilliantly realised. If there was one single comic book series that anyone with even a remote interest in music should listen to, this is it.
