10 Comics Heroes Who Lost Themselves (But Saved The Universe)

8. Doctor Manhattan - Doomsday Clock

Wally West Flash Forward
DC Comics

Doomsday Clock chronicles various Watchmen characters' search for Doctor Manhattan as the DCU is grappling with a new superhuman arms race based on the "Supermen Theory", a school of thought that claims the American government is creating its own metahuman army. This heightens global tensions as other nations attempt to create their own super-powered forces.

As the plot unfolds and Manhattan becomes more involved, it is revealed that the DCU is part of a greater Metaverse (that revolves around Superman as a character and idea), and that Manhattan created the New 52 by removing several years of DC continuity.

The near-omnipotent being observes the ensuing chaos and remains passive until he is moved by Superman's desperate efforts to control the situation.

Consequently, he travels back in time and undoes his interference in the timeline, saving the DC and Watchmen universes and using the last of his power to restore peace to his home world.
