Neil Gaiman's Sandman is widely considered to be one of the best-written comic book series of all time, and while it only ran for a total of 75 issues, it managed to captivate audiences through intricately detailed storytelling and fascinating characters At its center, Sandman is all about Dream of the Endless and his ultimate demise.

The series began with Dream's imprisonment on Earth, and after his escape, he set his sights on rebuilding his world of dreams and nightmares. Through the course of the series, he traveled through multiple realities, facilitated the handover of Hell, and explored his various friendships and relationships.

The series concluded with Dream's passing and replacement, but it was never clear as to who was responsible. It seemed as if Lyta Hall might be the one responsible, seeing as she called upon the Furies to destroy Dream, but it could have been any number of people or powerful beings, up to and including Lucifer.

While it was never clear, it could have been that Dream himself was responsible for his downfall, as he set many of the events in motion that resulted in his destruction. Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely this secret will ever be revealed, as Gaiman has moved on, and the series is, for all intents and purposes, complete.
