The biggest difference between comic book readers and comic book characters can be summed up in one out-of-context Dazed and Confused quote: “I get older… They stay the same age.” Despite decades having passed since the inception of most classic costumed crime-fighters, publishers keep finding more and more convoluted ways to ensure that these lucky people don’t have to age with the passing time.

This temporal time paradox serves as the inspiration for Spider-Man: Life Story. Similar to Batman: Year One, the story brings us back to Peter Parker’s seminal years as the neighbourhood’s favourite masked menace. However, it doesn’t leave us there. Over six issues, we see Spider-Man and his amazing friends age in real time, bringing us from the swingin’ sixties right up to 2019.

Melding real-life events with some of the web-head’s most famous storylines, Life Story creates a new version of history that is certainly a lot more fun than our own, and, particularly in the case of the notorious Clone Saga arc, often manages to be even more fun than Spidey’s canonical tales.
