10 Comics That Mocked The Reader

8. Ambush Bug

Deadpool Dunce Hat
DC Comics

Ambush Bug easily gains the title of 'most ridiculous DC character that is still around today' - having been created in 1982 as something of a throwaway character, who would be turned into not only a recurring part of DC's universe, but also made into a superhero after he became a cult favourite among comic fans.

While he's sparsely used as a major character in comics, Ambush Bug did manage a fair few miniseries, all of which manage to be even wilder and wackier than the character alone can be - especially the first of these, which goes by the hero's name. Ambush Bug ribs on just about everything about comics, which naturally involves a few good-natured cracks at its audience's expense - all of which are balanced out by Bug's assurance that he very much loves anyone who buys his strange series.

When a comic gets so meta that the second issue literally contains the DC logo as a character, you know you're on to something special, even if it makes jokes at your expense here and there.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
