10 Comics Too Big To Fail (That Did Anyway)

8. New Gods

Jack Kirby is a legend when it comes to comic books. He was one of the principal creators behind Marvel's most notable characters, having co-created Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and The Incredible Hulk. When Kirby created a character, he made up an entire world for them to play in.

Kirby went to work for DC after he felt he had been mistreated at Marvel, and with his arrival came the creation of Jack Kirby's Fourth World. His new universe-sized creation spawned several comic titles, with the New Gods standing as the best overall series.

Unfortunately, the books didn't sell well for DC. Kirby's high-minded series-spanning anthology didn't entice enough readers to throw down some cash and buy the books. Ultimately, New Gods only ran for 11 issues, which is shocking to think of these days.

New Gods may not have sold well when it was first published, but the concepts and characters from Jack Kirby's Fourth World have been used as a basis for much of the DC Cosmic Universe. Darkseid is easily one of Superman's greatest foes, and the various elements of Kirby's universe can be seen in most DC Comics still published today... not to mention, DC is releasing a New Gods film based on Kirby's work in the near future.
