Much as the old adage of 'trust no-one, not even yourself' is not good advice, it is advice that would serve Superman pretty well in the vast majority of his time in comics.

And nowhere better than in The Final Days of Superman, where the 'Energy Superman' - a man named Denny Swan who gains Superman's powers from a bolt of energy infused with the Man of Steel's powers - turns on the actual Superman, in a bizarre comic that results in the hero's death after he absorbs Swan's powers.

Swan dies during this fight, but he does get the title of being one of few people to take Superman out for good - only this is the same world that Superman and alternate universe Clark White share, so while Denny does kill Superman, Earth does still have a backup Kal-El on hand.
