10 Disgusting Comic Book Moments That Made Us Feel Sick

6. 'Fridging' It (Green Lantern)

After decades of wearing the Green Lantern ring, Hal Jordan was replaced in 1994 by Kyle Rayner in an attempt to revive interest in the character for a new generation. Replacing such a popular and well established hero was never going to be an easy task though, so DC enlisted writer Ron Marz to bring some shock value into the proceedings.

Rayner's love interest Alexandra DeWitt was initially portrayed as a vital supporting character who helped Kyle train as a Green Lantern, but the poor girl was never given a chance to develop further. While Rayner was drawn away from his house, super villain Major Force broke in, killed DeWitt and then stuffed her body in the refrigerator. Rayner later discovered her corpse after a note left by Major Force told him to look in the fridge. Suppose it beats finding her while looking for the milk...

Many were disgusted by what Major Force did, but even if the violence doesn't offend you, critics of the storyline felt that DeWitt's death had been used purely as a plot device that would provide Rayner with more character motivation. Many took offence at the idea of using the suffering of female characters to enhance the male heroes. Legendary writer Gail Simone went one step further and banded together with other creators to form a website called 'Women in Refrigerators' that dissected the phenomenon and debated the issue with a number of important industry heads and fans alike.
