10 Greatest "Dead And I Know It" Comic Book Moments

9. Jankowski - The Longbow Hunters

DC Comics

There are certain names that become synonymous with comic book characters. (Few could think of the Fantastic Four without also remembering Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, for instance.) And for Green Arrow, the person who so often comes to mind when thinking of Oliver Queen is writer/artist Mike Grell.

Grell had previously dabbled with Green Arrow at times in the 1970s, but it was his return to DC Comics in 1987 that saw him fully get to oversee the world of the famed Emerald Archer. At this time, Grell embarked on a run that would totally reinvent Ollie and deliver the definitive run of Green Arrow tales.

Once such tale, was Grell's three-part The Longbow Hunters arc.

Moving to Seattle to be with Dinah Lance, this story soon had Queen and Dinah investigating the local drug scene and hunting down the mysterious Seattle Slasher. For Black Canary, though, she ends up attacked, kidnapped, and then disturbingly tortured.

When Green Arrow finally tracks Dinah down, his arrival on the scene is heralded by an off-panel arrow landing straight through the chest of Lance's torturer, Jankowsi - with the eerie soul stopped mid-conversation when he realises what's happened.

This creep absolutely deserved payback for his actions, and this was one of the standout moments of a truly standout story.
