10 Greatest DC Comics Of The 21st Century, Not Starring Batman
5. Superman: Red Son
Some of the best comics that DC puts out are referred to as Elseworlds: books that have DC characters, but are outside of the main continuity. One of the the most engaging Elseworlds stories is Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar.
The premise of the story is wonderful: what if Superman had landed on a farm in Ukraine instead on Kansas? He's not raised to uphold truth, justice, and the American way, but instead grows up in the Soviet Union.
Red Son also has alternate versions of other DC characters, including a plot that shows Lex Luthor becoming President in order to fight against Superman. Being outside of DC continuity, Red Son also has the advantage of being able to tell a story that spans from the 1950s all the way to 2001.
It's a fascinating take on Superman and examines what makes the character compelling.
