Another rare exception in that the headlining stars of this crossover were major villains rather than the heroes that team-ups usually involve (and the fact that they were both created by Jack Kirby), The Hunger posits Darkseid as the hero of this tale as he prepares to defend his home planet Apokolips from The Devourer of Worlds, Galactus, who's set the world in his greedy sights with the aid of the Silver Surfer. Darkseid enlists his mortal enemy Orion and eventually the Surfer to combat the world-eater, and it's about as epic as you'd imagine. That's due in no small part to writer/artist John Byrne, who allegedly was given the idea for the story by a fan at a convention and brings gravitas and philosophical wonderings to many of the scenes. By this point in his career Byrne had already told quite a few Fantastic Four/Galactus tales, so he must have been happy to be able to try out something new...
