10 Hated Comic Book Characters Who Became Fan Favourites

7. Squirrel Girl

Today she may be a beloved Marvel character with admirable traits, but back in 1991, when she was first created, Squirrel Girl was hardly a fan-favorite.

Doreen Green (otherwise known as Squirrel Girl) was perceived by those both inside and out of the Marvel universe, as a joke. She was treated as a starry-eyed kid by her peers, and it didn't help either that her alias was also played for laughs.

From the beginning, though, Doreen has had the potential to be a formidable hero, which was even apparent in her very first issue. She'd initially ask Iron Man to be his side-kick, but he'd quickly turn her down. Tony inevitably gets egg on his face for this though, as Doreen rescues him from Doctor Doom shortly after.

The years following this would then see Doreen helping other heroes, like the Hulk, where she'd continue to maintain a supporting role from the nineties onwards. Her supporting role would even be downgraded further when Doreen is later reduced to being a nanny.

Fortunately for Doreen, she's resumed her role as the superhero Squirrel Girl where her representation has improved extensively with her 2015 solo series. This, in turn, has begotten her a rapidly growing readership that has come to appreciate her for the powerful hero that she always was.
