10 Iconic Comic Book Moments (That Are Secretly Terrible)

7. Doomsday Kills Superman - The Death Of Superman

The Killing Joke Barbara Gordon
DC Comics

Let's be honest. The Death of Superman was a gimmicky idea since it was only written to boost flagging sales. Nevertheless, it was still pretty powerful to watch the world's most famous superhero meet his maker.

But if DC Comics made the bold decision to snuff out Supes (at least for a while), why not have him killed off by one of his more iconic villains like Zod or Brainiac? How about writing a story where the Man of Steel's rogue gallery team up to to defeat him once and for all? Wouldn't it have made more sense if it was Superman's arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor, to be the one who did the deed?

Instead, the spit-curled superhero was murdered by a mindless monster whose dialogue boiled down to "ARRGGHHH!"

Now, that's not suggesting Doomsday is a bad character. We discovered years later that this muscle-bound brute is Kryptonian himself and so, is instinctively drawn to Superman. That's a fantastic origin... but it's never mentioned in this story. At the time, we knew nothing about Doomsday. It would've left a much bigger impact to watch a villain with a history and relationship with the Man of Steel take him down - never mind the fact the character would return shortly after.
