10 Iconic Comic Book Moments (That Are Secretly Terrible)

6. The Decimation - House Of M

The Killing Joke Barbara Gordon
Marvel Comics

In House of M, Scarlet Witch uses her reality-warping powers to create a world where mutants live in relative peace. Although things start off fine, Scarlet Witch's mental instability causes the reality she created to gradually crumble.

Realising that she had been playing god, she utters the infamous words, "No more mutants", reverting the world back to normal. However, there is one major difference; 99.99% of all mutants have lost their powers. Not only that, the X-gene that triggers human mutation no longer exists. This means that new mutants can't be born, seemingly condemning them to extinction.

This is a great idea since we get to watch X-Men like Beast, Kitty Pryde, and Wolverine try to find a way to reignite their kind without the aid of their abilities.

At least... that's what you'd think would happen. This premise loses its effectt since nearly every mainstream mutant kept their powers. Wolverine, Mystique, X-23, Cable, Colossus, and dozens more weren't affected by Scarlet Witch's spell.

Even though The Decimation is meant to be the most devastating thing to happen to mutantkind, there are a lot of X-Men stories during this era where the reader wouldn't notice mutant numbers have dwindled to near-extinction.
