10 Important Lessons Comic Book Superheroes Taught Us

5. Shazam's Compassion

Superman John Byrne

The mere concept of Shazam is every kid's fantasy. With one word Billy Baston is able to become a larger than life superhero. Though, as the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. However, even in his human form Billy has his own superpower.

In Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil before gaining the power of the gods, Billy spares the life of a cockroach. Later on, when he's captured by Mr. Mind who's using an army of insects for his evil plot, the same roach recognizes him and shows the young hero mercy.

Anyone else would have crushed the life out of that cockroach, but not Billy. He knows what it's like to feel small and powerless, and it's only through his empathy that he's able to later save the day.

We often underestimate small actions, like a simple compliment, a hug, or paying for a friend's meal. But, it is impossible to know just how impactful those tiny acts of compassion can be for someone. A little kindness can go a long way, so take a play out of Billy's book and be kind. After all, wouldn't you want the same for yourself?
