For the reboot of DC Comics to really leave a mark, it was imperative for the creative teams to be bold and daring. But for Brian Azzarello's run of Wonder Woman, he went way too far.

Even though Azzarello's series was commended for his edgy tone and inventive retelling of Greek mythology, there was one aspect in the story that was so baffling, it's a wonder how it made it to print. For decades, Diana's people, The Amazons of Themyscira, were depicted as cultured and noble warriors who had an affinity for art and nature. But in Wonder Woman #7, Hephaestus reveals the all-female tribe spent centuries raping sailors to fall pregnant before slaughtering them. The warrior women raised female infants on Themyscira while male infants were discarded.

This origin isn't just insulting to Wonder Woman but to her entire mythos. Imagine if this origin was repurposed for Superman's Kryptonian race. It pointlessly ruins the character.

This backstory was so reviled, it was retconned when Greg Rucka took over for Wonder Woman: Rebirth, five years later. In this relaunch, it was explained that the Amazons that Hephaestus spoke of were imposters.
