Many awkward situations in comics are due to bad writing or inappropriate storylines. But in this example, it simply boiled down to bad timing.

After Wonder Woman's soul was destroyed by the demonic Neron, she was left at death's door. After technology and magic failed to heal her, Wonder Woman passed away. When the Justice League prayed for a miracle, the gods of Olympus agreed to resurrect the superhero.

If you read this story arc without any context, it's pretty solid. If you read it IN context, it couldn't have come out at a worst time. In Themyscira, Wonder Woman's title is Princess Diana. The issue where she died came out three days after Princess Diana of Wales was killed in a car crash. It was eerie for readers to read a fictional story with the words "Diana Struck Down," the same week the beloved Welsh princess passed away.

Obviously, this story arc was planned months in advance and the similarities were purely coincidental. Nevertheless, it's still a creepy story to read when you understand how it must've been perceived when it was released.
