5. Ant-Man Beats His Wife

Invisible Woman Malice
Marvel Comics

The original Ant-Man, Hank Pym, was married to fellow Avenger, Janet Van Dyne, who is better-known as the diminutive super-heroine, the Wasp. Unfortunately Pym had a habit of lashing out at her, and infamously slapped her during one tantrum.

According to the writer, Jim Shooter, Pym was supposed to hit Van Dyne accidentally but the artist, Bob Hall, drew it so the strike appeared intentional. Nevertheless, this little mistake had Pym branded as a wife-beater for years.

When the Ultimate Universe was created during the millennium, the writers had a perfect opportunity to make Pym a more sympathetic character. However, they instead depicted Pym as a jealous lunatic who tore out Van Dyne's hair and punched her so hard, it snapped her palate in two. The worst moment is when he uses his Ant-Man helmet to summon hundreds of ants to bite her while she is in her shrunken form.
