10 Inappropriate Things Marvel And DC Want You To Forget

7. Big Bertha

Mister Miracle Superman Big Barda
Marvel Comics

On the face of it, Big Bertha is already pretty problematic. Her power is being able to be superhumanly strong and durable, by becoming obese? How many people had the opportunity to stop this idea before it made it to print and didn't see an issue there? Her superhero name is something that would normally be used as an insult behind someone's back. While the argument could be made for empowering plus size women and owning your own body, that is all thrown out of the window very quickly.

When off superhero duty, Ashley Crawford is actually a world famous supermodel. This is where things take a nose dive for the character as she isn't walking the catwalk as a plus size model. Using her ability to manipulate her bodily tissue, Crawford transforms into a stick thin "perfect" woman and is rewarded as the highest paid supermodel in the USA for a time.

As if the comparison to her two body types wasn't enough to offend everyone, Marvel took it one step further with how she loses the weight during her transformation. Not content with a regular transformation, Bertha actually purges her weight by vomiting. Intentional or not, making light of a condition as serious as bulimia is disgusting. It's incredible that Big Bertha appeared in over 100 books before disappearing in the last couple years.
