10 Inappropriate Things Marvel And DC Want You To Forget

2. Marvel’s Swimsuit Specials

The nineties brought with it some amazing comics. We saw the likes of Carnage, Deadpool and Ghost Rider make their first appearances, Bane broke Batman's spine and Marvel released five years of swimsuit specials.

Created as a parody of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Specials, this tone deaf idea is a prime example of everything wrong with nineties comic culture. Sure, we saw the likes of Punisher and Namor in some on brand skimpy pants, but the main selling point of these books were the ladies of Marvel. The covers saw the likes of Rogue and Storm in tiny bikinis, which tells you all you needed to know about the content inside the book.

Critical reception was overwhelmingly negative, pointing out that the books were more fan-service than worthwhile reads. The story was secondary to the over-sexualised portraits, though realistically no-one was reading this book for the storyline. Critics also pointed out that some of the female characters in their swimsuits were just as revealing as their regular costumes.

Attempts have been made to revisit the swimsuit specials, but unsurprisingly, Marvel have declined to publish any more of these books.
