10 Indie Comics You Must Read Before You Die

4. 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank

Saga Image Comics
Black Mask Studios

4 Kids Walk Into a Bank has maybe the best premise for a comic, as it is basically a gritty Quentin Tarintino film about children robbing a bank.

Moreover, the comic manages something short of magic by creating child characters that are likeable and interesting without having them seem like tiny adults. It also avoids the stereotypical roles often forced onto a cast of kids, as all the group have three-dimensional personalities, with each clearly having had some significant time spent developing them.

The story also offers an intricate balance of a dark and light tone imaginable, managing to contain lighthearted banter between childhood friends and genuine threats on the lives of children within the span of its pages.

For a surprisingly dark comedy involving the comic equivalent of the Goonies planning a crime, 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank is something of a Holy Grail.
