10 Indie Comics You Must Read Before You Die

3. Chew

Image Comics

Although arguably more a mystery comic than one about superheroes, Chew is one of the diamonds of the indie comic industry for the sheer number of absolutely incredible (and often hilarious) powers given to its characters throughout.

The best of these is given to its protagonist, Tony Chu, who is able to psychically know what has happened to anything he eats - a power which works on more than food, and is used to results that range from humorous to downright disturbing (and sometimes both).

Chu is not the lone interesting character of the comic, however, as the cast of the comic is filled to the brim with colourful and wonderful characters - a semi-alcoholic cyborg, a bloodthirsty secret agent chicken, and a vampire, to name a few choice members. More importantly, superpowers in the world of Chew always revolve around food, which makes for some absolutely fantastic and completely crazy powers, that make conventional ones look entirely mundane.

The series has also won four comic awards - two Eisners and two Harvey Awards respectively - just in case you needed further reason to give it a read.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
