3. The Spider Who Came In From The Cold

Marvel ComicsAt least the Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Reign never went as far as Frank Miller's Batman and abandoned his "no killing" rule about dealing with bad guys. This particular webhead suffered from no such compunctions, working as an assassin along with the best there is at doing that in 2008's What If? Spider-Man Vs. Wolverine #1. Which we're not sure is a grammatically correct question but whatever, it still gave us a story where Logan and Peter are superpowered government spies who assassinate the heck out of a lot of people. Having joined Wolverine on a secret rescue mission to Russia Spidey gets recruited to do black-ops work, becoming a permanent companion to the former X-Man in their dangerous and violent missions. This might also be the only version of Peter Parker who takes his powers seriously and actually trains with them, becoming more powerful than any other Spidey in the process; with Logan's help, he hones his early-warning Spider Sense to the point that it's more like a form of precognition, which allows him to "know" things he otherwise would't and predict the flow of combat in a battle. He also gets a pretty sleek costume, seen above. This is not the Peter we adore, though, as the confidence in his abilities and relatively stable lifestyle (he's left Mary Jane and got married to a woman named Alex, the spitting image of Gwen Stacy who doesn't ever get killed, by this point) means he's pretty stony faced and serious in action: no jokes or quips here. He also adapts his web shooter to fire bullets, all the better to shoot people with. Right in the face. This is the spy version of Spider-Man who frequently kills people. Enjoy, kids!
