10 Insanely Awkward Moments In Marvel Comics History
6. Spider-Woman Is Exposed As A Double Agent - New Avengers #14 (2006)
Jessica Drew was taken in by the terrorist group, Hydra, and turned into an agent called Spider-Woman. When she was ordered to take out the SHIELD director, Nick Fury, he convinced her to join him. Shortly after, she became a superhero and eventually joined the Avengers.
While the Avengers were battling Hydra in Japan, Captain America saw Jessica voluntarily let the group's leader escape. The following day, Cap confronts Jess, asking where her allegiance lies.
According to Jess, Nick Fury ordered her to work for Hydra and SHIELD. She would pretend to be loyal to Hydra while she was secretly building intel to use against them.
Since Fury was MIA when Cap learned about this, no one could validate Jess' claim. As a result, none of the Avengers knew whether she was lying or not, leaving tension between her and her teammates for years.
This conversation wasn't just awkward for the characters. It was also awkward for the readers, since no one knew whether Jess was telling the truth. (Technically, neither did the writers since this entire story was retconned when Spider-Woman was revealed to be an alien queen, but that's a whole other story.)
