10 Key Members Of The Justice Society Of America

4. Doctor Mid-Nite (Charles McNider)

DC Comics

Long before Marvel's Daredevil, Doctor Mid-Nite was the world's first disabled superhero.

Debuting in 1941, Mid-Nite was a physician by the name of Charles McNider who was blinded by a gangster's grenade. With the local mob bringing him new patients every day - McNider knew he had to do something.

Realising he could see in perfect darkness, McNider developed a pair of special goggles which could help him see during the day. McNider donned a costume and became Doctor Mid-Nite.

Going after the gangsters, McNider used blackout bombs - which could cloak a room in complete darkness - to bring them down. He then joined the Justice Society and All-Star Squadron as they fought on the front lines and home turf during World War II.

In these adventures, McNider acted as the team medic - helping to save lives whilst his superpowered peers battled the Nazis and their supervillain allies. He would also often serve as the go-to doctor for superheroes all over DC's pages.

Recently appearing as a major character in the CW's Stargirl TV show, Mid-Nite is a hugely underrated but important character in both the legacy of the Justice Society, and the legacy of comic book superheroes.
