10 Key Members Of The Justice Society Of America
3. Doctor Fate
First appearing in More Fun Comics #55 in 1940, Doctor Fate is the Justice Society's resident magic-man and one of the most powerful sorcerers in DC.
With super-strength, flight, and endless magical abilities, Doctor Fate may also be one of the most powerful DC heroes - even besting Superman and the Spectre on occasion.
Another legacy hero, the Doctor Fate who founded the Justice Society was Kent Nelson.
The son of a famed archaeologist, Kent uncovered the tomb of a Lord of Order known as Nabu whilst exploring Mesopotamia. Nabu, waking from his sleep, trained Kent in the ways of magic for years as a champion of justice. Armed with the all-powerful Helmet of Nabu, the wizard sent Kent out a mission to restore order to the world.
With World War II devastating the world, Doctor Fate provided support for the allies. Operating from an entryless tower in Salem with his wife, future Doctor Fate Inza Cramer, this magical superhero paved the way for more supernatural heroes to appear on DC's pages.
With more than ten characters donning the Helmet and fighting supernatural threats, Doctor Fate has been a mainstay of the Justice Society and has served in all of its iterations since the 1940s.
With his immediately recognisable costume and skillset, it's no surprise that Doctor Fate has also appeared in various cartoons, TV series such as Smallville and Stargirl, and is set to appear in the upcoming Black Adam film.
