10 Manga With Amazing Artwork
8. Gin Tama
It turns out Samurai vs Aliens works infinitely better than Cowboys vs Aliens ever did. Set in Japan’s Edo period, Hideaki Sorachi’s beloved series centres on an interplanetary invasion courtesy of diabolical aliens known as the Amanto.
Sorachi’s mastery of battle scenes has to be seen to be believed. A common pitfall of depicting epic warfare is the issue of spacing and a cluttered look about the characters and the action. Sorachi’s crisp artwork and attention to detail sidestep these issues entirely, allowing the action to look clear and distinct.
Also worth mentioning is aesthetic appeal of the clothing, outfits pencilled to fit and reflect the characters and their demeanours perfectly. With an on point mastery of facial expressions and posture, Sorachi’s character development extends beyond the script and bleeds nicely into the art, making the whole story an even greater read.
Running 77 volumes from December 2003 to June last year, Gin Tama has inspired numerous adaptations, spin-offs and sequels in mediums such as anime, novels and even a live action film courtesy of Warner Bros. back in 2017.
