10 Manga With Amazing Artwork
7. Uzumaki
Of the many fictional cities and locales over the years, few have created more dread or unease than the town of Kurōzu-cho.
Horror maestro Mangaka Junji Ito has long been renowned for upping the terror ante in manga. With the cursed Kurōzu-cho, he introduces us to a world of bizarre supernatural phenomena and the spiral curse. We follow the couple Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito as the series sinks further and further into the bizarre and fearsome spiral curse.
With increasing paranoia and madness amongst the cast of townspeople, Ito captures a mad world spinning gruesomely out of control. Whilst the story itself is an on point sleep wrecker, Ito’s chilling, often surreal artwork brings his nightmarish vision to life in perfect order.
Originally published in the late 1990s, this black hearted study of nihilism and Lovecraftian dread is a must read for horror buffs. Ito’s chilling, often deceptively simple art work. For those who enjoy this scary cult classic, a 2000 film adaptation is out there though many argue the medium of film couldn’t quite replicate the dread of the manga itself.
