10 Manga With Amazing Artwork

6. Sun-Ken Rock

Sun-Ken Rock
Shōnen Gahōsha

Boichi’s mastery of the human anatomy may well inspire many to take up going to the gym. His astute eye for detail in regards to hair, eyes, muscle definition and everything in between lend a great deal to the action scenes his sharply designed characters engage in.

Sun-Ken Rock follows Ken, a hard hitting delinquent tragically orphaned courtesy of the Yakuza. After embarking on a hopeless quest to Korea to secure the love of fellow classmate turned police officer Yumi.

As is so often the case in both manga and in life, things don’t go according to plan. Ken’s plan to join the force fails and he winds up pulling a 180 and joining a criminal gang instead through a series of fortuitous events.

Mastering various shades of darkness and even watercolour, Boichi’s moody, detailed art bring the visceral thrills and poignant emotions of Sun-Ken Rock to life beautifully. His close attention to the features and clothing of his colourful cast provide them a lively, energetic aesthetic. So astute is his mastery of the physical form and shading that his characters often look ready to burst out of the page and into reality.
