One of the most seminal and important works of manga in the history of the medium, Katsuhiro Otomo’s futuristic classic still demands reader attention to this day. Often credited with spawning the Japanese cyberpunk and, in turn, influencing a whole generation of manga and cinema, it was also adapted into the highly successful 1988 film anime.

Starting in 1982 and finishing up in 1990, Akira follows the trials and tribulations of various violent and troubled characters getting by in a post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo. All of them are bound by the need to prevent the return of the destructive titular character who obliterated Tokyo decades prior.

Otomo does an incendiary job capturing some of the wildest, most destructive scenes of carnage ever put to page. His attention to detail never strays, even when constructing full splash pages of wild action. Otomo’s relentless, painstaking attention to detail brought his artistic vision to incredibly vivid life. 30 years on and few artists have managed to match the incredibly high bar Otomo set with his modern classic masterpiece.
