Ace neurosurgeon Dr Kenzo Tenma has grown jaded and unhappy with the classist dogma plaguing the hospital he operates in. When dealing with the aftermath of a harrowing massacre, Tenma decides to confront these political biases head on.

In charge of treating the twins, Anna and Johan, Tenma devotes himself to saving Johan from the gunshot injury he sustained to his head. The shot was intended to hit the major and in applying all of his time to Johan, Tenma leaves the mayor be, leading to his death.

Many would’ve preferred he save the mayor and simply leave the lower status Johan to die. Now shunned and despised by his peers, he becomes the primary suspect when every hospital member who messes with him turns up dead. Worse still, the kids vanish without a trace.

With no evidence against him, the police remain hot on his tail regardless, convinced he must be the killer as Tenma himself unravels a complex and mind bending mystery.

Unpredictable from the start, Monster builds great tension with every red herring and plot twist thrown the reader’s way. Creator Naoki Urasawa’s artwork is subtle and emotive in style, its mastery of suspense almost cinematic in nature.

An all round masterpiece, Monster is a thriller in a class of its own.
