Dressed from head to toe in black, Nightslayer is something of a mirror image to that of our titular hero. In fact, as a son of privilege who trained himself mentally and physically in the pursuit of perfection, the Nightslayer was very much the Anti-Batman of his day. He was a major antagonist in the Batman universe right before the huge reboot that was Crisis on Infinite Earths and, as a result, was written out of continuity completely. I dont think hes been a main event baddie since the mid 80s. In fact, he may not even exist in Post-Crisis continuity or The New 52 timeline at all... Beginning his criminal career as The Thief of Night, Anton Knight (see what they did there as well?) wasnt particularly interesting, but he had the fact that he was created by Doug Moench on his side. A wonderfully talented writer, Moenchs Pre-Crisis 80s run read like a fascinating soap opera, with Alfreds daughter Julia Pennyworth, new Robin Jason Todd and the reintroduced Vicki Vale all getting caught in up various sticky situations. It was a compelling superhero drama. On Moenchs watch, characters like Harvey Bullock, Jim Gordon and even corrupt mayor Hamilton Hill rose up from the sidelines and became fascinating, well rounded Human beings in their own right. Nightslayer was no exception. In perhaps his finest moment, Nightslayer actually switches costumes with a confused Batman and The Dark Knight becomes convinced that he is, in fact, the Nightslayer. Meanwhile, Nightslayer operates as an evil version of Batman for a considerable period of time. As a cruel and vicious doppleganger, especially one with a reasonable insight into Batmans psychology (having been, quite literally, inside his head), The Nightslayer could yet return as a very dangerous villain who forces our hero to confront all sorts of things about himself (and his nocturnal persona) that hed rather not think about. The costume might be a little bland for todays audience, but Nightslayer is a character who deserves another shot at main event status.
I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction.
I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long!
If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it).
I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work.
Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that!
Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?)
Latcho Drom,
