10 Messed Up Superman Storylines You Won't Believe Exist

Containing a lot more brain eating than your average comic.

Superman Comic
DC Comics

As the beloved and iconic all-American golden boy, many of Superman's comics are nothing short of wholesome. After all, there's something about seeing the Man of Steel overcome evil for the good and truth and justice that never quite gets old, no matter how many we see it on the inked page before us.

But this isn't to say that all of Supes' stories are all wholesome and pure. There's a fair share of weird, dark and bizarre plot lines with Superman, that detail just about every weird scenario you could ever imagine the superhero being in.

Because the fact that he is such a moral bastion means that Supes often gets the short straw in comics, as writers and artists know that putting him in dire and strange straights will fascinate an audience all the more for seeing how he deals with it - be his reaction good or bad. Containing everything from evil plants to a bloodthirsty gorilla, these stories remind us that with great power comes great potential to be put in weird storylines, whether you like it or not.

10. Luthor

Superman Comic
DC Comics

Luthor is one of the best Superman comics you probably haven't read - but it's also, when you think about it, one of the wildest at the same time.

The series feels like it could be set in just about any of the various comics we've seen Superman and his biggest rival square off in when it starts. It quickly develops into something more complicated, however, as we see Luthor either create a robot woman, or otherwise replace a dying woman's entire internal system with robotic parts in order to create a new superhero ironically named Hope.

Luthor sets up Hope against Superman through the means of the Toyman, a villain who he purposefully manipulates behind the scenes. Lex has the man be held responsible for blowing up a children's daycare centre, after having convinced the criminal that his bomb would be used in a robbery instead.

When Hope goes to apprehend him, Lex has her drop the man from a great height, intending to kill him. As is generally the case when someone is dropped from a high place in Metropolis, Superman comes to save him, which results in Hope and Supes getting into a fight. To conclude his nefarious plans, Lex then explodes this robot woman so Superman will be blamed, despite the fact that it seemed like Lex was love with her.

Oh, and in case you were wondering - yes, it is heavily implied that he bones the robot lady. And no, this is not the first time he has boned a robot.
