10 More Most Inappropriate DC Comics Storylines Ever
7. Rainbow Girl
Imagine if you will a superhero that encapsulates just about every negative female trope and stereotype in one character. Offensive and eye-rollingly tone-deaf in every regard, there is no way anyone could truly take Rainbow Girl seriously.
Debuting way back in the 1960s, Rainbow Girl was a rejected applicant for the Legion of Super-Heroes, but of course, as a woman, she was given an incredibly shallow personality. Of course wanted to be an actress, what possible other motivations could she have?!
Rainbow Girl wanted to use the super team as a stepping stone to a career in showbusiness, and had already used her powers to win the Miss Xolnar contest. Because apparently female characters want nothing other than to be beautiful and famous, according to DC Comics at least.
Aside from her backstory, even Rainbow Girl's powers were incredibly reductive. She is essentially someone who can manipulate emotions thanks to her feminine hormones, which would have been bad enough, even if she had not only ever used them for her own personal gain. Representation and equality is incredibly important in the world of comic books, even more so when you see what used to pass as acceptable.
