10 Most Anticipated Comics Still To Come In 2017

3. Phoenix Resurrection

Phoenix Resurrection Arthur Adams
Marvel Comics

Release Date: December 27

Jean Grey, alongside Wolverine and, hopefully, the Fantastic Four, will be one of Marvel Legacy's big revivals. We've not seen the real Jean in the comics for over ten years now, and with Legacy being the theme of the day, it's a smart move from Marvel to bring her back, seeing as how her younger self hasn't really been up to the task of replacing her OG counterpart.

The return will come in Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey - a series written by Matthew Rosenberg and drawn by Leinil Yu, and will last for five issues. Marvel have promised a bevy of variant covers in the run up to the event (a hallmark that it is, to them at least, a pretty big deal), as well as an all-star cast of creative talent, with "five blockbuster artists" being billed to partake in the mini.

It's exciting news for X-Fans and True Believers in general, as the publisher have promised that Jean's return won't just affect their X-Titles, but the Marvel Universe more generally too. Given what we saw from Legacy #1, which seemingly confirmed the Phoenix has a major part to play in the cosmic battle slowly approaching, Resurrection could just be one of the most important books of the publisher's relaunch.

Can we get an excited 'Phoenix scree', up in here?

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
