Beaten, bruised, and broken, name one type of injury and you can bet Batman has suffered it.

One of Batman's most popular, and ultimately detrimental, traits is that at the end of the day he is only human. Bruce Wayne, the man beneath the cowl, is almost as soft and squishy as everyone else.

Part of that vulnerability and humanity makes Batman that much more relatable than most heroes. Despite his injuries, he will always find a way to fight back even in the face of certain death.

In the wise words of Alfred: "Why do we fall? So that we can learn to pick ourselves back up." And boy has Batman had some falls over the years. There's no need for glowing space rocks or the colour yellow to defeat this Caped Crusader - Batman has been shot, stabbed, and bashed with varying degrees of severity depending on which suit he picked out that morning.

It also begs the question of how hard is it to actually kill the Batman? Certainly plenty of villains have tried and sometimes come alarmingly close using nothing but knives or their bare hands.

Looking back at over 70 years of crime-fighting, here are some of Bruce's worst injuries of all time. Frankly, it is a miracle he's still standing let alone leaping from rooftops and fighting bad guys.

10. Broken Back - Knightfall

Let's start with the obvious - the infamous breaking of the Bat.

During DC's Knightfall series, readers got a glimpse at what the world would be like if there was no Batman. Turns out the Bat-contingency plan is to just find another Batman, which leads to a whole other world of problems.

The reason Gotham was in dire need of a new Batman was because Bane broke the last one. Like a careless toddler fed up with their old toys, Bane snapped his back and discarded him.

Due to days of fighting other criminals, Batman was exhausted come his battle with the enraged mercenary. In a gruesome twist of fate and spines, Bruce had his vertebrae shattered in one catastrophic bash of Bane's knee.

This became one of the most legendary events in all of DC and to this day influences countless comics. In many ways, this was the first time audiences came close to having Batman be killed off or be taken out of the picture entirely.
