While it's fantastic to have a comic book film do so well both financially and critically, it was a difficult watch as the villain descended into madness. The Oscar winning Joker offered us one of the darkest takes on the character yet, as well as one of the worst murders he has ever committed.
Having found out he was adopted and Penny was not his biological mother, he visits her one last time in the hospital. He tells her that he used to think his life was a tragedy, but he now thinks it is a comedy and grabs the pillow from under her.
The most horrifying part of the scene is just how emotionless Fleck is throughout the murder. This woman has given her life to raise him, yet all is forgotten. You would assume that even at his worst, Fleck would still feel some kind of emotion as she desperately fought for her life.
Yet, Fleck's face doesn't change at all, even as the heart monitor stops. The harrowing scene makes for deeply uncomfortable watching, as it shows just how far gone he is at this stage.
