10 Most Controversial Superman Comics Of All Time

1. The Death Of Superman

Superman Wonder Woman
DC Comics

In the seven-part story arc, The Death of Superman, Supes encounters an unstoppable monster called Doomsday who effortlessly defeats the entire Justice League. Superman manages to kill the beast, but snuffs it immediately after due to his injuries.

This saga had the potential to be an incredibly emotional story if it wasn't clearly a publicity stunt. Supes was only in the ground for five minutes before DC Comics teased his resurrection. What's the point of killing him off if they're going to revive him immediately after? It gives his sacrifice little meaning.

Worse still, his return was milked for everything it was worth. After his funeral, four mysterious men appeared, insisting they were the real Superman. After months of speculation, it turns out the real Superman was... none of them! Well, that mystery was anti-climatic.

It turns out Superman was genuinely dead but his soul was alive (which doesn't make sense) and he was revived through Kryptonian technology.

To its credit, the story introduced great characters like Kon-El, Steel, Cyborg Superman, and Doomsday. It had terrific artwork and some of the most iconic splash panels in comics. But considering the amount of hype the story had, it could've been handled a lot better.
