10 Most Disturbing Comic Book Panels Of All Time

2. The Death Of Superman

Disturbing Joker Panel
DC Comics

Comic: Superman #75

Superman is about as close to god as any comic book character can be; after all, he's pretty much the origin of superheroes in general, and the guy has been saving the day for more than 80 years. He's been hurt a few times over the years, but he always managed to come out alright in the end.

While it's true that Superman has died on multiple occasions, the only time it seemed to matter to anyone was when it happened in Superman #75. This was a comic book that had a massive media campaign, and the whole world knew it was coming.

Even so, it was hard to turn the page to see the image of Lois Lane crouching over her beloved Clark, dead at her feet as his tattered cape catches the breeze on a piece of rebar. It was one thing to know Superman was going to die, but it was entirely different seeing it.

The panel pictured here has an element of finality in it, and while DC Comics wasn't likely to keep the Man of Steel dead forever, there was little hope he would return quickly. There is a lot of negativity about this event and how it harmed the comic book industry in the '90s, but there's no denying the evocative nature of this image.
