3. Professor Pyg

Professor Pyg is a relatively new addition to Batman's rogues gallery, but one who managed to intimate his credentials pretty much instantly by carrying out some of the most heinous acts in Gotham's two-centuries-long history.

Created by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert, Pyg is a deranged murderer who possesses a menacing aesthetic and a horrifying modus operandi - to capture innocents, mutilate their bodies, and turn them into his own willing slaves, which he calls 'Dollotrons'.

Bat-fans got their first real taste of Pyg during Batman & Robin Reborn, where the villain and his brainwashed minions took over Gotham's circus (the same one seen in The Killing Joke, in fact) and captured Damian Wayne. The new Robin narrowly avoids the transformation process, which involves Pyg's victims having their genitals removed and a mask getting fused to their face.

Needless to say, there are few Batman villains this disturbing.
