10 Most Inappropriate DC Comics Storylines Ever
1. Cocaine Gives You Superpowers, Vampires Give You AIDS - The New Guardians
DC is known for its rogue's gallery, housing some of the most iconic villains of any medium. The New Guardians, a fairly obscure DC title from the eighties, attempts to make some new contributions to this line-up. What we ended up with were two of the most poorly taught-out villains in comics history.
The first of these was SnowFlame, the leader of a Colombian drug cartel and a man who gained superpowers from ingesting cocaine. Any time SnowFlame took a sniff of the white stuff, he would increase in strength and become engulfed in dangerous white fire. Despite the irresponsibility of teaching impressionable minds that taking cocaine can turn you into a superhero, SnowFlame became a cult favourite from his one and only appearance. One mega-fan, Julie Sydor, even created an epic webcomic that continued his adventures.
If you're looking for a character who was decidedly NOT a cult favourite, look no further than the Hemo-Goblin. A white supremacist vampire whose sole mission was to exterminate non-whites, he ended up infecting several members of the New Guardians with the AIDS virus. One of these members just happened to be Extraño, who just happened to be a ridiculously outdated stereotype of a gay character.
Call me crazy, but depicting HIV as a condition on par with vampirism that mainly targeted gay people was not exactly a progressive step forward from DC.
