10 Most Inappropriate Supergirl Storylines
3. The Time When Supergirl Was A Figment Of Jimmy Olsen's Imagination
As mentioned before, Jimmy Olsen's (mis)adventures with the Last Son of Krypton in the Silver Age essentially served as psychedelic trips, and one of these odd excursions to led Supergirl's first appearance in comics.
Now, this was not the Kara Zor-El that readers would later meet, but was rather a Kryptonian borne out of a wish Olsen spoke into existence through the power of a magical totem. His intent was to give his super-powered pal a partner on his level, but this was far from the case. 'Super-girl', as she came to be known, was a hindrance to Superman while he was engaged in his heroic efforts, and the powerhouse pair did not get along.
The walking wish got a chance to shine when she saved Superman from a particularly nasty case of Kryptonite poisoning. This sadly proved to be her undoing as she was just as vulnerable to the extraterrestrial mineral as her counterpart was, but lacked his ability to recover from it. Ultimately, Super-girl begged for Jimmy to end her pain and he did so by wishing her out of existence.
At the end of the day, this story was a litmus test by DC to see how readers would react to Superman getting a female counterpart. That however, does not explain why she was reduced to a faux romantic interest and nuisance rather than a compelling character worthy of her self-contained stories.
