10 Most Inappropriate Supergirl Storylines
4. Andy Jones's Disheartening Life
The Linda Danvers version of Supergirl was not quite as strange as her predecessor but that does not mean that she did not find herself in unsavoury situations. Some of these predicaments stemmed from the fact that the heroine's double life meant that some of her connections took a turn for the worse.
The latter issue was the case for Danvers's friendship with Andrea Martinez in the Supergirl's Peter David run. Martinez was a lesbian explorer who merged with the angelic Comet/Andrew Jones (it is a long story) and used her new form to find success and eventually get close to Linda. Unfortunately the latter did not reciprocate Martinez's feelings and they drifted apart.
While the deception is iffy, the comic run was lauded for its attempt at LGBTQ representation, even winning a GLAAD award for the landmark moment. This is nice and all, but it also ignores how Martinez/Jones was captured by the angel Blithe (who she ended up becoming romantically linked with) and tortured for multiple issues in order to get at Supergirl.
This was following another run where Jones endured torture at the hands of an unknown assailant who made her relive her worst life experiences. Representation in media is important but the way Andy as a character was handled was dismal to say the least.
