4. World Shaking Sex

Superman Supergirl Kiss

Frank Miller and Lynn Varley head down a road often taken in issue # 2 of The Dark Knight Strikes Again. They pair Superman and Wonder Woman. In fact, they even give them a teenage daughter. What we don’t normally get to see is five pages of airborn sex.

Diana finds a depressed and down-trodden Clark who has given up on the idea of being a hero and saving the world. She punches him and asks him where the man who once took her with such resolve and passion was. He said “Here” and they took to the sky. Their sex began to cause a tsunami, tipping over a destroyer, causing the evacuation of the big island of Hawaii and an earthquake of 7.8 on the Richter Scale. Their climax was literally explosive as it caused a volcano to erupt.

This is really something that you’d expect to see in fan fiction rather than in a mainstream comic book. And while the act did get the Man of Steel back in action, if you follow the idea through logically, thousands or maybe millions died due to their amorous act. What is the message readers are supposed to get from this? That sex and violence are two sides of the same coin?
