Also known as Mamaragan, the Wizard 'Shazam' was the ancient Egyptian wise man who gave Captain Marvel/Shazam his unique powers. By speaking the Wizard's name, the young Billy Batson could harness the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.

Introduced in 1940 for Captain Marvel's origin story, this powerful mystic dwelled in the Rock of Eternity, a magical fortress held in another dimension behind a subway tunnel. When Billy Batson accepted the Wizard's powers, Shazam died - his spirit living on as a guide for Earth's new champion.

The New 52's origin story differed slightly, with the Wizard being more akin to a lightning God than an ancient mage, and DC Rebirth claimed him as a member of 'The Immortals'. Regardless of his origin, the Wizard's legacy as the power behind Shazam/Captain Marvel holds him in high regard in the DC Universe.

The character also appeared in the 2019 DCEU movie Shazam!, providing Billy Batson with the magic word he needed to become a superhero and defeat Dr Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins who had been set loose on the world.
