10 Most Powerful Sorcerers In DC Comics
3. The Spectre
The Spirit of Vengence, Redemption, and a vessel for the wrath of God, the Spectre is easily one of the most powerful superheroes ever published. Less of a true 'sorcerer' and more of a supernatural deity in the DC Universe, the Spectre has both wielded infinite power and maintained costumed crime-fighter status.
First introduced in 1940, the Spectre was originally Jim Corrigan - an honest cop murdered by mobsters, thrown into a river, and reincarnated to fight for truth and justice as a ghostly apparition. Joining the Justice Society of America as a founder, Corrigan's early adventures saw him take on crooks, evil wizards, and Nazis - all while leading a double-life as a detective.
With his supernatural powers fluctuating throughout his appearances, the Spectre could either be a magical ally or an overpowered menace. Inconsistent in his abilities and allegiances, it wouldn't be until the modern age that he would become a significant threat.
After Jim Corrigan found peace and relinquished his power, his Spectre-Force went on a bloodthirsty, vengeance-fuelled purge of magicians, sorcerers, and magic-users. In the 'Day of Vengeance', the spectral power claimed the lives of many of DC's greatest supernatural heroes and stripped others of their powers.
Finally, another murdered cop - Crispus Allen - assumed the mantle of the Spectre, becoming a balance in the DC Universe between good and evil, justice and vengeance. Jim Corrigan's version returned in DC's New 52, given 'divine powers' by God and sent on a quest to purge the DC Universe of evil.
Jim Corrigan appeared briefly in the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earth story arc, where he passed on his Spectre powers to the deceased Green Arrow. Arrow then took his place at the CW's Spectre, inviting actor Stephen Amell to return in future as the all-powerful spirit.
