10 Most Questionable Comics Kickstarters

3. Willem: A Graphic Novel (Goal: $1,000... Down From $10,000/Pledged: $0)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/708930135/willem-take-2-d When they say a bad Kickstarter video is worse than none at all, this is what they mean. First, the thumbnail image (what you see before you click "play") is plagiarized from a poster by Ryan North, creator of Dinosaur Comics and writer of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Second, the video is flipped for some strange reason, as the writing on both the posters and William J. Abritton's jersey are reversed. Third, the video... you know what, just watch it, we'll wait. It's clear Abritton is uncomfortable asking for money and deflects that discomfort into attempts at humor, but really he just transfers that discomfort to the viewer. This was his second attempt at a Kickstarter video: his first (for far more money) included a scene of Abritton begging in an unheated cellar on Christmas Eve: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/708930135/willem-a-graphic-novel?ref=nav_search It's hard to tell who created the thumbnail image for this one, but it sure wasn't Abritton, who seems to have left in a watermark added by Netfreestuff.co.uk. As for the pitch itself... "Love, loss, time travel and zombies" isn't a bad start (zombies are a little overdone, but can still work with the right concept). But those bare few words are overwhelmed by the air of desperation that wafts around this pitch like the scent of a freshly dug grave.
