10 Most Quintessential 'Superman Moments' In Comic Book History

1. €œYou Needn€™t Be Afraid Of Me. I Won€™t Harm You€ €” Action Comics #1

And finally we come to the number one moment on this list, which belongs not-so-coincidentally to the first Superman comic book ever published. In Action Comics #1, readers were introduced to so many immortal tenets of Superman lore. A tiny baby (not yet named Kal-El) is rocketed away from a doomed planet (not yet named Krypton). He lands on the planet Earth, and is discovered by passing motorists (not yet named Jonathan and Martha Kent). The version of Superman introduced in this comic book is a bit rougher around the edges than the version we are used to nowadays. He does, however, show a soft side when it comes to innocents €” namely Lois Lane. After seeing him lift a car up over his head, Lois is understandably frightened. So what does Superman do? He smiles at her disarmingly and says: €œYou needn€™t be afraid of me. I won€™t harm you.€ How perfect is it that these are the first words Superman ever said to Lois Lane? It€™s so simple, and yet this one panel distills everything warm, fun, nostalgic, and awe-inspiring about Superman €” and that is why it€™s number one on this list. Which other definitive Superman moments belong on this list? Share your own picks below in the comments thread.
