10 Need-To-Know Facts About The Sensational She-Hulk
1. She Was Created For Trademark Purposes
The television series The Six Million Dollar Man was so successful, it inspired a spin-off called The Bionic Woman. It was an immediate hit, causing the studio to consider gender-swapping other properties to widen the demographic of their viewers.
After looking at their shows' ratings, the studio executives thought The Incredible Hulk was their best bet, intending to create a spin-off revolving around a female Hulk.
If you thought the Marvel bosses were thrilled to have another tv adaptation inspired by their work, they weren't. Because She-Hulk didn't exist in the comics, Marvel were unable to trademark the character if a studio created her first.
As a result, Stan Lee and John Buscema had to churn out a female Hulk story as quickly as possible. After a bit of brainstorming, they devised the character of She-Hulk and had her first self-titled issue hit shelves in February 1980.
Ironically, the She-Hulk television series never materialised. Her creation may have been an accident, but it seemed to have worked out in the end. She-Hulk has entertained readers for forty years and is sure to entertain millions of viewers when she Hulk-smashes her way onto Disney+ in the not-to-distant future.
